Read all about our feature in Our State Magazine. We had a great time with David Bailey, of Greensboro, NC, when he came out to give our restaurant a review. He was especially impressed with our homemade cobblers. Here’s what he had to say.
Don’t miss the fresh fruit cobbler at Smoky Mountain Diner in Hot Springs.
The word is out about Smokey Mountain Diner. And not just about the mouthwatering cobblers; the diner also has a reputation for hiker hospitality. The cobblers are made with fresh fruit — blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and peaches — whenever they’re in season and, out of season, they’re filled with frozen fruit the diner has put up. “People drive from everywhere to eat our cobblers,” says owner Genia Hayes-Peterson.
The diner is the first restaurant hikers coming off the trail hit. So be advised: sometimes the cobbler sells out within a couple hours. The hikers who have run out of cash by the time they get to Hot Springs are just as hungry as the ones who haven’t, and the talk on the trail says the diner is where to go. “We do barter food out to the hikers,” Hayes-Peterson says. “They help me outside and cut wood for elderly people, maybe do some pruning and pulling up weeds.” And the diner always has dishes to wash.
